During the Christmas holidays, we all focus upon gifts and giving, but once the New Year rolls around, the tradition of a new beginning, of making resolutions quickly captures our attention. Thinking upon the two traditions of giving and making resolutions prompted me to combine the two of them by giving you the gift of knowing how to make resolutions or how to make goals that ultimately offer you a road map for success in all areas, such as:
- Family and Home
- Spiritual and Ethical
- Financial and Career
- Physical and Health
- Mental and Educational
- Social and Cultural
So . . . my gift to you comes in the form of mini-lessons for keeping your resolutions by helping you to understand the principles behind making goals. Most of us, if we write down any goals at all, think it simply means jotting down a few hasty words. That’s why the wishful thinking of 99.9% of New Year’s resolutions does not work. These mini-lessons are being given to help you learn how to master the art of writing SMART goals, which is an acronym for the following elements:
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Time-bound
The above acronym will aid you in writing your goals; however, it will take several mini-lessons to learn how to implement the five elements of SMART into your goals. For that reason, these “teachable moments” about SMART goals will be printed up in mini-lesson formats and handed out after each service so you can take them home as a handy reference for actually writing your goals. And additionally, these mini-lessons will appear on my personal blog throughout my upcoming I’ll Say YES, LORD sermon series in the month of January. One component of saying YES to the LORD is in walking out our response to HIM through the fulfillment of our goals.
But! But!
If we do not understand the concept and importance of writing down our goals, then like our New Year’s resolutions, which fall so easily by the wayside, and like the sower’s seed in the gospels that fell by the wayside, so will our saying YES to the LORD likewise fall by the wayside.
So in the scope of eternity, we do not want to get to heaven and look back and see our lives as wasted seed that fell by the wayside. Rather, we want to strive to reach excellence in all areas of our lives. One of the vital keys to excellence and success in life is learning to write and achieve our goals.
